Beautiful, East Texas

Is a place, a time, a state of mind, and a state of being. It is literal and mythical in the same moment. “Beautiful,” simply Is. In that wonderful place and time are found men, women, and children well remembered and mostly with love though sometimes something less. No matter the sentiment, they are all a part of, “Beautiful” and the stories that spring therefrom.

In addition to people, “Beautiful” is made up of wonderful places. Landmarks, scenes, and vistas, unique to that lovely time and place are just waiting for you to listen or read along. There is so much to discover in, “Beautiful.” Much of it is there and then.

Lenses and Perspective

You’ve Been Hanked is a podcast and newsletter wherein Hank relates those stories and things that yearn to be told and shared. In storytelling, perspective matters, nuance matters. Hank’s perspective is shaped by his experience and understanding.

Born and raised in, “Beautiful, East Texas,” Hank’s stories are often, but not always set there and then. He is a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. A man of faith, Hank is devout Latter-day Saint. He is an enthusiastically active Freemason. For many years now, Hank has struggled with Parkinson’s disease and is a determined Parkinson’s Warrior.

When not telling tales of, “Beautiful,” Hank also likes to talk about life as seen there the lens of faith, family, fraternity, and the struggles brought on by Parkinson’s. You’ve Been Hanked is not a nostalgia piece, though certainly there is some of that here. It is not a proselyting vehicle but is a place where faith makes a significant contributions. The secrets and private aspects of his fraternity are not here revealed though Masonry is often referenced here and sometimes discussed in a way that highlights Hank’s love for that Gentle Craft. From time to time, frank discussion related to life lived with a degenerative neurological disease takes center stage.

These stories are Hank’s. So is the perspective. Now you have a better understanding of the lenses through which many, though not all, of them may be expressed.

Faith, hope, and charity.

Wisdom, strength, and beauty.

Love of family and friends.

Fortitude, determination, and perseverance.

Optimism, realism, and occasionally a few tears.
